Everything the Left touches, it destroys – including joy

People need to realize the Left is using the alleged “existential” threat of global warming to wage war against liberty, against the Western world’s (not China’s) economy, and against joy.

The automobile, that magnificent enhancement to human freedom and joy, is a target of the Left. The idea that individuals should be able to go where they want when they want in their own car is anathema to the Left – it provides way too much individual liberty. Ideally, almost no one should own a car. We should all aspire to live in a high-rise apartment building in a major metropolis and use public transportation, ride bicycles or walk. If for some reason we have to travel a longer distance, let us say to conservative relatives who selfishly own their own homes in the suburbs, we can use public transportation; and if none is available, we can use Uber or Lyft.

Even the family, one of life’s greatest sources of joy and meaning, is a target of the climate change activists. They believe that there are way too many people in the world. Kids are carbon-emitting machines. So, an increasing number of women, including married women, are choosing not to have children. They don’t see how they can justify bringing children into a world in which they will be roasted to death. And frequently their progressive parents (the would-be grandparents) agree with them. As I wrote in a previous column, based on the many comments of New York Times readers on an opinion piece written by a woman who has decided not to have children because of global warming, many readers wrote that despite the fact that they long for grandchildren, they support their child’s decision to go childless.

Now we have another joy of life that progressives are targeting in the name of combating global warming: Christmas gifts. Many progressives have long opposed giving Christmas gifts in the name of combating “consumerism” (to be fair, some religious conservatives share that ascetic view). But climate change will soon constitute the greater moral reason.

In the Daily Mail this week, a woman wrote an article making this case.

“Last year,” she wrote, “surrounded by wrapping paper and abandoned gifts, I suggested to my husband Chris that next time we shouldn’t buy anything — for each other or the children.

“Not buying anything for my husband is trivial because he can buy for himself. But not buying presents for our two girls, aged six and three, is a trickier proposition…

“We’re increasingly aware of the global impact of our purchases. Everything we buy the kids will go into landfill…

“With the planet on fire and plastics everywhere it seems like we are at a moment of reckoning and have been for some time…

“I’ve forced this rule on the family, telling my mother, in-laws and the brothers and sisters not to buy the girls anything.

“My sister was appalled and very cross that she will be thought of as the mean old aunt. Just because I want to strip the joy out of Christmas, why should she have to?”

This woman’s article encapsulates much of the darkness the Left represents and creates.

First is the war on joy. Part of the joy of Christmas, especially for children, is receiving gifts. To deny this is to deny reality. This can be verified by asking any adult to describe the joy they experienced as a child looking under the Christmas tree for their gifts.

Second, it is a war on altruism. Gift-giving may be animated by a number of factors, but one fact is undeniable: Giving people gifts is an altruistic act. If people stop doing so – whether to combat “consumerism” or to combat global warming – they are ending one of the most widespread expressions of altruism in our society.

Third, children are the primary targets of this nonsense. Progressives seem to have a particular animus for children. They wage war on children’s innocence with early “sex education,” with LGBTQ activism in elementary school, and by promoting drag queen “story hours” beginning at age 5; by their closing schools for nearly two years for no valid reason; by depriving children of God, religion and patriotism; by their irrationally frightening children about their future (they will essentially be burned alive); and now by depriving children of Christmas gifts and, presumably, birthday gifts (they, too, add to landfills).

Fourth, the woman who wrote this article has no qualms about imposing her beliefs on everyone else. It is not enough for her to tell her husband not to give her 6- and 3-year-old daughters Christmas gifts. She has ordered the girls’ grandparents, aunts and uncles not to do so: “I’ve forced this rule on the family.”

Fifth, progressive reasoning is not only morally defective, but also factually defective. If no one in the United Kingdom gave a single Christmas gift, nothing would be accomplished with regard to global warming. But a whole society would be deprived of a major joy of life, and the country’s economy would take a major hit.

Just remember this rule of life: Everything the Left touches, it destroys.

That includes joy.

I saw this Jolly Green God when I got off I90 in southern Minnesota back in ’92. Went to a small county run camp ground and he was there. I think he’s 60′ tall. At the time, hardly anyone noticed. Now of course, he’s worshiped.

Well, in one sense it was “climate change” that originated the practice of giving gifts at Christmas.

As the story goes, it was a supernova in the skies that was the “Star of Bethlehem” that brought the Magi, bearing gifts, to a newborn Christ in a manager, thus associating gift giving with the celebration of Christmas.

To people circa 1 AD (now thought more likely to have actually been 4 AD), that supernova—some assert if may have been a comet—would have been a change in the “climate” of the their celestial sphere.

In any event and in compete agreement with Dennis Prager’s arguments in the above article, I conclude that this is just another attempt at dumbing down civilization in a vain attempt for virtue signaling.

Merry Christmas, Joyous Holidays, and Happy New Year to All of good will!

The best I know was that “The Star of Bethlehem” was Jupiter. The Magi were astronomers that noticed a series of celestial events and conjunctions involving the planet Jupiter till they decided to travel from Persia to Jerusalem. (Remember, Daniel had been made head the magi during the captivity.) It would have taken some time. They didn’t find him in a manger. Christ was about 18 months old and in a house. (That’s why Herod ordered the murder of kids 2 years old and under.)
When the magi left Herod they saw Jupiter reach it’s highest point over Bethlehem.
(The best I know this was September 11, 3BC)
BUT, the important thing is that the Christ was born, lived a sinless life, voluntarily died to pay the debt he did not owe. (The wages of sin is death.) God raised him from the dead. For all who accept Him, the debt is paid. (Freewill is a big thing to God.)
Christmas time is the time of year when His birth is celebrated in the world. Even though it’s not even the right season of the year, there’s nothing wrong with celebrating His birth.

OK, scvblwxq, calling you out on that:

This, from the very same Pew Research poll that you cited (https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/08/09/what-the-data-says-about-americans-views-of-climate-change/ ) except that it is not the “short reads” version:
6 Climate change is a lower priority for Americans than other national issues.
Overall, 37% of Americans say addressing climate change should be a top priority for the president and Congress in 2023, and another 34% say it’s an important but lower priority. This ranks climate change 17th out of 21 national issues included in a Center survey from January.
(my bold emphasis added)
. . . did you, perchance, “overlook” mentioning these statistics?

“Of the seven issues asked about in our polling, climate change (along with COVID-19 — also at 39%) ranks at the bottom as “high priority” issues.”
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fewer-americans-see-climate-change-as-priority-opinion-poll-2022-04-22/

“About half of Americans still think climate policy is important. However, this view is largely partisan. Democrats rank climate change policy as the third most important issue, behind the economy and healthcare and followed by energy policy. Republicans rank climate change as the least important policy issue to them—though, three in ten still cite it as very or extremely important.
Americans are less willing to pay for a carbon fee than they were just a year ago. In fact, nearly two-thirds of Americans are unwilling to pay any amount of money to combat climate change.

I don’t think the polling indicates anything more than the religious left’s success in indoctrinating high school “science” teachers.

The 90% (D) versus 42% (R) he quotes actually shows that the brainwashing has been monumentally less successful on the Republican side. You could restate that as “58% of young Republicans versus 10% of young Democrats somehow manage not to believe in the coming Apocalypse despite overwhelming attempts to brainwash them.”

I don’t know why polling still works in this day and age, but it’s still fairly accurate. Which is why ol’ Joe is so sad on days when he’s a little more aware of the world than usual.

Others have told you of the many problems with your so called survey. The most significant being that expressing concern in a survey is not the same things as supporting the Biden agenda.

You really should stop trying to convince everyone of something that simply isn’t true.
For some reason you are desperate to prove that there is no difference between right and left on this issue. A few days ago you were trying to sell everyone on the notion that we need a large government to protect us from the free market.

Sounds like your primary goal is to protect the left and socialists, and you are willing to make up any story to that affect.

it plays fine- and it’s funny!

reminds me of the many UF* stories and videos I watch- when humans see or claim to see aliens from a space craft, even though they’re often quite small, it’s very frightening- I can imagine if I saw one in my back yard- with that big head and huge black eyes- even if it’s 3′ tall and skinny- they never seem to smile 🙂

I’ve never seen a clear picture of a UFO. It’s always fuzzy and out of focus. I wonder why that is? You would think that somebody, somewhere, could get a clear picture at least once. But no.

I don’t know if aliens from other planets exist or not but it couldn’t be proven by what is publicly available here.

I think it is probably likely that there is life everywhere in the universe where life can survive, but then we get into the questions about higher lifeforms and how likely it is that they could visit us.

I don’t rule anything out, but haven’t seen any solid evidence of aliens (from other planets), although there are a lot of incidents that are unexplained.

The incident with the triangular-shaped UFO that flew slowly across Arizona, and was seen by hundreds if not thousands of people, is a case in point. A lot of people think they saw something the size of a battleship float silently over their heads. I don’t know what to think about it.

I guess I need to see one for myself to be convinced. 🙂

Triangular craft have been seen in many places for several decades. There was a big “flap” in Belgium, I think in the ’80s or ’90s seen by many people. The Phoenix and Hudson Valley sightings were mostly V or boomerang shaped- which is what was reported though the craft might have been triangular if all of it was seen. What I saw was V shaped- at least, the pattern of lights was V shaped- at night- I didn’t see the craft. It was large, moved in a straight line across the sky, and was absolutely silent.

March 23, 2007

Former Arizona Gov. Fife Symington, who trotted out an aide dressed as an alien 10 years ago to spoof the frenzy surrounding mysterious lights in the Phoenix sky, now says the lights were actually an alien spacecraft.

Now a pastry chef and business consultant, Symington is keying in on the anniversary of the sighting of the so-called “Phoenix Lights” by reversing course, saying the lights were really extraterrestrial and that he saw a UFO himself.

“I’m a pilot and I know just about every machine that flies,” Symington said Thursday. “It was bigger than anything that I’ve ever seen. It remains a great mystery. Other people saw it, responsible people. I don’t know why people would ridicule it.”

Here is another pretty good account of the 1997 Arizona unidentified object:

http://edition.cnn.com/US/9706/19/ufo.lights/

What were those lights in the Phoenix sky?

Researchers still sorting out hundreds of witness accounts

June 19, 1997

PHOENIX (CNN) — When it appeared in the Arizona sky on the night of March 13, it was witnessed by hundreds of people. Neither researchers nor witnesses have yet figured out what Arizonans saw in the event now dubbed “the Phoenix Lights.” But that hasn’t stopped them from trying to puzzle it out.

Tim Ley and his family are among the hundreds of witnesses who have come forward to talk about the Phoenix Lights. They first saw the lights while looking north from their Phoenix home.

Now, their recollections of what they saw have been transformed into computer images, using a combination of digital photos of the landscape taken by Ley and computer drawings of the objects his family saw in the sky.

“When it finally got here and we realized this thing was coming right over us, we really started getting antsy,” Ley said. Then, said he and his son Hal, it went directly overhead in complete silence.

Tim Ley said that when the right side of what appeared to be a giant V-shaped craft passed directly over him, the left side was a couple of blocks away.

His wife, Bobbi, who also saw the aerial light show, said the size of the craft they saw was overwhelming. But, she said, “It didn’t seem threatening. … When it was right overhead and we couldn’t hear a sound, it was like you’re just awestruck.”

end excerpt

It sounds like they got a pretty good look at it. it doesn’t sound like they are describing flares fired by the U.S. military, which is the official explanation.

I haven’t found a link yet, but I believe this object was sighted flying not just over Phoenx but across the whole State of Arizona from northwest to southeast.

It’s believed by U*O followers that the government has photos, videos, craft and bodies. But maybe not. One reason the rest of us aren’t coming up with such stuff is it’s difficult. Try taking a photo of a jet going over your area. It’s quite small. The arguments against ET craft and critters being here are significant but the arguments in favor of that are significant too. It’s like- people who don’t come here or watch videos by guys like Tony Heller can’t imagine how anything could be wrong with the claim that 97% of climate scientists think we’re having an emergency. I’ve read many books on the topic and watch many YouTube channels- and, I saw one myself in ’83. If you’ve seen one and didn’t photograph it- you’re still going to believe you saw something. If nothing else- it’s a fun topic to follow. As to how they could visit us- the theory is “zero point energy” resulting in alteration in the space/time continuum. Considering we’ve had science for just a few centuries- and other planets could have gotten there tens of millions of years ago- anything is possible. You’re right- we’re not seeing evidence. That’s the point of the recent hearing staring David Grusch, the whistleblower. And a few highly rated pilots also at that Congressional hearing. Then, the Senate wanted to push the issue- forcing the federal government to cough up everything it has and knows- and aerospace industries also, which supposedly have alien tech. But a few Congressmen blocked it. Why block it if there’s nothing to see?

The U*F seen over Phoenix in the ’90s is the same object seen by thousands of people in the Hudson Valley in the ’80s and ’90s, including me.

If you happen to get lucky and see one landing nearby or flying nearby- don’t get too close because many people have gotten radiation poisoning from them- documented at hospitals- probably a by product of their ship’s propulsion system, not as a weapon. They might abduct you aboard- then they examine your orifices, so don’t get too close. 🙂

I write that 3 letter word as U*O because I’ve had my messages moderated if I write it as it should be.

There are several fascinating YouTube channels on the topic. Like every other topic, I look at as many as possible and get different opinions. They don’t all agree. There are relatively conservative U*O buffs and some far out flakes, like a certain Dr. Greer.

Many members of Congress are starting to demand that U.S. inteligence agencies show Congress what they have on any alien craft or encounters.

And the Intelligence agencies are dragging their feet.

Our federal bureaucracy seems to have become more powerful than the People’s representatives. We need to change that. The Intelligence agencies work for the People, not the other way around.

Good points- I agree. We also don’t see ghosts during the day nor most other paranormal stuff. Our imaginations are cranked up in the dark. But there are also countless reports of sightings during the day. One in Africa decades ago- at a multi racial school (Kenya?). Another at a school in Australia, also decades ago. The *** culture is very rich indeed.

As for lights- makes sense unless they want us to see them. I’m well aware of all the skepticism- and also the proponents. I’d make a list of the better YouTube channels but the moderators here might not like it.

We can’t ignore what David Grusch said. I can’t think of a reason he’d make it up.

So maybe there’s something here or maybe not- but I’m watching it close.

One of the best stories is by fighter pilot David Fravor- a Top Gun pilot who saw the tic-tac craft in 2004. A guy like him simply wouldn’t invent such a story. He saw something but we don’t know what it was. The radar guys on the aircraft carrier and other ships in the convoy saw anomalies on their radar. What Fravor reported was seen by multiple detectors.

So what’s this have to do with energy and climate? A lot of it’s true.

He saw something but we don’t know what it was.

I generally don’t doubt “sightings” when people say they saw something that they couldn’t identify (some of them are ridiculous though).

the arguments in favor of that are significant too.

I don’t doubt there is life elsewhere in the universe. But I doubt that they are coming here, for a few reasons. The biggest one being why? How do they even know about us?

Reasonably, they would have to be within about 125 light years to know we’re here, and that’s assuming they could detect our faint first radio broadcasts – and I would expect that we would similarly be able to detect their emissions if they are advanced enough to have done that and also gotten here.

The other alternative would seem to be the “ancient alien” concept, which again leaves me wondering why?

And as I’ve previously noted, I’ve seen some astounding declassified technology in the 80’s, so I can certainly believe a lot of what people see could be human-made.

And everywhere she looks, she sees plastics. (In fact, it would behoove her to imagine her home without all the plastic items – no TV, very few clothes, no kitchen appliances, etc).

Is it true that kids, especially, get too many crappy toys and stupid unwanted junk for Christmas? Probably, but that is the fault of the givers….they should buy better, more significant gifts.

I bought my grandson, aged six, a rocket kit and a Chestnut Tree.

If someone rants about plastics and fossil fuels- and they prove they mean it by no longer using either, then I’ll congratulate them for having some integrity. And respect them despite their obvious low intelligence.

I remember my parents always got us (there were 8 of us) some clothes (ugh!), some fun stuff and books.
I loved the “Landmark” books! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landmark_Books_%28series%29 They had a “World” series and a US series.)
I’d sometimes stay up all night reading one.

Side note: One year an uncle got my 2 brothers and I bugles and trumpets. The next year Dad got his boys drums. 😎

PS I still have over 30 of the Landmark books. (The bugles and trumpets seem to have disappeared rather quickly.)

When I was in the second grade, my teacher wanted everyone in the class to pick out a musical instrument that they wanted to learn how to play.

I went home and asked my dad if I could get a drumset, and he said absolutely not!

I didn’t understand then, but I do now. 🙂

I don’t see the problem with toys and plastic items. My grandchildren run straight to the playroom at my house to play with the toys my wife saved from when our daughters were children. Most of them are plastic and are still in very good shape and desirable to the grandchildren.

The clueless climate caterwaulers should not be going on vacations. Imagine the carbon dinoprint of a trip to Disney, for example. The kiddos will just have to be happy with camping in the backyard and making smores.

On the search for that quote which as it turns out is quite common, I found this:

“Karl Marx on Religion”
Marquette Law School – Milwaukee, WI

I guess I’ve known for a long time that the well known
home town university is snake pit of leftism, since they
claim that isn’t what he meant.

Wow, just wow, what a clown the author of that claptrap is.

Marx just loved religion. Opium was not illegal of addicting then, maybe legal but always addicting and doping the people to inactivity, and thus easy to control, so great for the “state”.

Only a liberal could spin the truth of Marx’s words to be something positive about religion. AND of course religions k!ll, true for musl!ms currently, BUT how many people did even that ONE, or all religions kill over the last 110 years compared to Marxists and “National Socialists”?

I would guess that Dictatorial governments have killed well over 100 million in that time frame, religions 1 10th of 1 % of that number?

No one wants to buy used EVs and they’re piling up in weed-infested graveyards
https://fortune.com/2023/12/22/no-one-wants-to-buy-used-ev-piling-weed-infested-graveyards-tesla-bmw-vw/

The shift away from cars with dirty combustion engines is running into a new hurdle: Drivers don’t want to buy used electric vehicles, and that’s undermining the market for new ones, too.

In the $1.2 trillion secondhand market, prices for battery-powered cars are falling faster than for their combustion-engine cousins. Buyers are shunning them due to a lack of subsidies, a desire to wait for better technology and continued shortfalls in charging infrastructures. A fierce price war sparked by Tesla Inc. and competitive Chinese models are further depressing values of new and used cars alike,  threatening earnings at rivals like Volkswagen AG and Stellantis NV.

There are apartments going up in Milwaukee that look like those ugly buildings you see in the former iron curtain countries.

i am much more interested in pieces / essays / blogs on actual climate change science… I categorize this more newsy or gossip. Newsy will not win the climate battles we face with the real adversaries. And these take time to open and scan through.

There are lots of posts here along the lines of what you are more interested in.
The whole “CAGW” meme with it’s various name changes are just a lever to power.
This particular post is about a small part of what that lever is being used to topple.

If you start at the beginning date of this site — WUWT, and also Climate Audit, Jo Nova, Paul Homewood, Judith Curry, and a few others, articles on “climate change science” will be plentiful. Articles and comments will point to other material, such as papers in journals.
I suspect that for many long-term readers the concept of Carbon Dioxide induced “global warming” was shown to be seriously flawed many years ago. I do note that many posts in the last few years are less science oriented and more related to the news about what people and governments are doing. Many people and governments have accepted the Anthropological Global Warming (AGW) concept as an axiom and act accordingly. Following these doings is sometimes “gossipy” such as following the antics of one’s dysfunctional family.
Unless you have trained in math and sciences, I suggest you go to a local university and ask department heads for free introductory textbooks: physics, chemistry, biology, geology, geography. Much is on the web if you know the terms to look for.

People who are dumb enough to buy into CAGW will stop having kids. The Darwin effect will kick in and reduce the number of Climate Alarmists. I don’t see a downside here. 🙂

There’s an eco-terrorist in my neighborhood that keeps unplugging my christmas lights in the middle of the night. They are already on a timer that turns them off 1 hour before sunrise, but I guess that’s not good enough for the vandal.
I’ve caught them on video, but I want to confront them in person and find out why they think it’s justified to mess with others’ private property.

Unless your lights light their bedroom, childish behavior.
Not Christmas lights, but I had a next door neighbor that … mentioned, not complained, to me that a motion activated light on my detached garage was shining into their bedroom window. I replaced that bulb with one that had recently burned out.
IF such is the case here, your lights are keeping them up, change your timer setting.
If not, please refer to 1saveenergy suggestion. 😎

Little kids do like to open presents. They will soon move on to something else, but it is the spirit of the season.
However, doing things with them will last a lifetime. For example, make cookies or candies or a gift for grandparents. Make a wreath for the front door or a garland. Make a bunch of things and give some to neighbors.
Make memories.
