VOX: Winter Has Disappeared Thanks to Climate Change

Essay by Eric Worrall

Record breaking cold in China, Russia and Europe doesn’t count, because “sleddable” deep snow hasn’t fallen in New York’s Central Park for 650 days.

Missing the feeling of a white Christmas? That might be solastalgia.

Finally, a term that explains the sadness of a whole season — and a way of life — melting before our eyes.

By Anna North  Dec 21, 2023, 7:00am EST

A snowy winter in New York City brings with it a kind of magic. The air goes crisp, then bitter, and fragile snowflakes sift down in the early dark, silvering the trees and blanketing the sledding hills in the parks. After the first big snow, children and adults alike rush out to make snowmen, creations that delight passersby for the next two frigid months, until the snow finally thaws. When I took my older son, then a toddler, out for his first-ever sledding session, he squealed with awe at the crystalline world before him, shouting, “It looks like Frozen!”

Today he’s 5, and I doubt he remembers what sledding feels like. It’s been more than 650 days since Central Park, where snow is measured daily, got more than an inch of snowfall at one time; last winter, the park got just 2.3 inches in total, less than one-tenth the normal amount. In early December, Brooklyn saw a few anemic flurries, and my son told me excitedly that his friends had tried to build a snowman during recess. But there was nowhere near enough material to work with. They settled for “a pile of snowflakes.”

This sense of winter melting away before our eyes is not unique to New York: While blazing-hot summers and stormy autumns come with their own dangers, scientists say winter is actually the fastest-warming seasonSnowfall is decreasing across the Northeast, the flakes slowly replaced by raindrops. The Great Lakes have experienced a 22 percent drop in maximum ice cover since 1973, and are frozen for a shorter percentage of the year. In December 2022, Utqiagvik, the northernmost city in Alaska, posted its warmest winter temperature ever at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, a full 36 degrees above the frigid average for that time of year.

Read more: https://www.vox.com/culture/24001256/snow-winter-climate-change-solastalgia-warming

New York may have enjoyed a few years of mild winters, but other parts of the world stretching from Europe and Russia to China have been experiencing extreme and in some cases record breaking cold, so I suggest the assertion that winter has disappeared is probably a little premature.

In 2012 the VOX reporter who wrote the article above published a novel “America Pacifica“, about political intrigue in the colony of the last survivors of an extreme ice age, a new snowball Earth.

The reporter doesn’t seem to have published any novels about the grim survivors of our coming age of warmer beach weather. Perhaps warm weather isn’t scary enough for a dramatic novel.

It looks like the cold air mass over China is working its way to the east, but at the present time the jet stream circulation off the Pacific ocean is keeping temperatures in the U.S. mild.

GLOBAL WARMING IN VERMONT
https://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/global-warming-in-vermont

EXCERPT

Each year has peak temperatures during the summer months June, July, August. The below graph shows those peak temperatures in Vermont, for about 40 years.

Those temperatures were measured by the weather stations in Vermont of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA

Vermont has four weather stations; Burlington, St Johnsbury, Castleton and Windsor.
New Hampshire also has four stations

The peak temperatures increased by 1.5 F over 40 years, or 0.0375 F per year.

Almost all people cannot sense the difference of 77 F and 78.5 F

Easiest way end the argument is to show where each site is, and changes to its surrounding area.

If they can’t do that, or don’t know… they should not be using the data, because they don’t know how UHI contaminated it is.

One would wonder whether they might have temperature data from more than 40 years ago. The late 70s/ early 80s being a notably cold period.

Perhaps they could go back to the 1930s or even earlier?

Forty years is about half a climate cycle. This particular 40 years was during the warming phase of the climate cycle. The warming is expected.

The United States, as a whole, warmed by about 2.0C from the 1980’s to today.

The 1930’s in the United States were warmer than subsequent years.

The United States has been in a temperature downtrend since the 1930’s.

-29.1’C doesn’t strike me as cold as I’d expect in that area.

Scotland can have similar temperatures, not that often or for long periods admittedly, with the coldest ever UK temperature of −27.2 °C (−17.0 °F) recorded at Braemar in the Grampian Mountains, on 10 January 1982 and also at Altnaharra, Highland, on 30 December 1995.

Altnaharra is definitely rural, although on a crossroads

With the wind in your face, both ways.

The winter I remember most from Tidewater Virginia area (Hampton) was the year the “creek” near our house froze over enough to walk on, some, not across. Yep, at least one kid got too close to the edge of the ice and broke through. The ice lasted about a week. Living in that location for about 10 years, that was the only time there was substantial ice. There was little of no snow during that cold snap.

We would get a snow day or two every couple of years. I don’t ever remember more than 2 days out. Usually only 1.

As an idiot child, about the 3rd grade, I usually walked to school. One day as I got ready to go to school it was so cold I rode my bike to school to get there quicker. It started snowing about 2 hours after school started and they sent us home early after about 3 inches had fallen, so I got to push my bike through the thick wet snow the mile home. What joy!

I was once in Calgary in late January. It was the first time I saw a car with remote start and I appreciated it.

We were having breakfast and listing to the local radio. Apparently the schools were in trouble for forbidding outdoor play. Some parents were concerned they were breeding them soft – it was only -26C with a couple of degrees of windchill. For someone who did not see snow until an adult I thought it was harsh. I spent a lot of that day walking outside around a factory that had plenty of snow. It was sunny though and not too unpleasant.

When you have Asia and Europe swept over by ⅔ of the frigid air in the Arctic, guess what? Warmer air has to sweep up from the south somewhere else to replace it. No vacuums allowed! This concept is common sense. But reason and common sense are commodities perennially in short supply these days.

More common sense: in a warming world we could have periods of more snow and less snow, but we shouldn’t be setting all these new deep cold records across continents. We shouldn’t be having such frigid cold air forming in the Arctic to cause such outbreaks if Arctic Warming Amplification occurs when Global Warming is advancing. Sheesh!

Vox should stick to subjects they know and understand, making candles, tye-dying T-shirts and new ways to serve granola. In fact, western societies are so committed to indoor living that the only time most of them spend outdoors is a short dash from the car to the supermarket, if they’re not getting their groceries delivered. Listening to someone living and working in a temperature-controlled climate, like a college professor, complain about weather is laughable to a normal outdoor person that works and goofs off both in the great outdoors during all seasons.

There is a similar problem during Florida summers. People live in their house or place of work at 78F most of the time except for going to and from their air conditioned places They spend a couple of minutes in the 90+F/90% humidity, not enough time for the body to adjust so they constantly claim how bad the heat is.

New York is close to sea level. The ocean water is warming up as it must due to increasing peak solar intensity in June. So the early winter precipitation over NY is more water than snow. Go inland a bit or higher and snow is trending up. Let us review the situation in late January when the ocean water has cooled a bit more and precipitation over NY may turn to snow.

The New York press was pushing this record snow free days to drown out the record snowfall being reported elsewhere. How contrived is something when they measure the snow to 0.1 inch and claim it has been 650 days since they had more than that figure.

Record snowfall is now dominating the news and the New York press cannot make enough noise to drown out the real news. And they have not yet got the IPCC memo that claims they always predicted more snow in a warming world. Just some of the snowfall record headlines listed in attached.

I think Anna North should be careful what she wishes for.

From December 21 to 26, 2022, a historic extratropical cyclone created crippling winter storm conditions, including blizzards, high winds, snowfall, and record cold temperatures across the majority of the United States and parts of Canada.

Areas which experienced blizzard conditions included parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario, with the Buffalo area of New York and the Fort Erie and Kingston areas of Ontario experiencing almost two full days of blizzard/zero-visibility conditions on December 23 and 24.

The cold wave affected all U.S. states from Colorado to the eastern seaboard and as far south as Miami, Florida. On December 24, 110 million people across 36 states were subject to wind chill alerts.

The storm and the related cold wave killed at least 100 people.

The storm was unofficially named Winter Storm Elliott by The Weather Channel.

A handful of years – or even a few decades – cannot define a trend. I well remember the 70s, a time of horrifically cold and snowy weather. We got married on Jan. 12, 1974 (yes, it’s almost 50 years!), and the day before, a $hitload of snow hit Cleveland. Enough that many people were not able to make it to either the wedding or reception.
All the out of towners did – they were from upstate PA, near the NY border (Snow Belt), and ALL had vehicles more than able to handle the trip.
The cold continued for most of the decade, including the winter of 1977-78, when we were confined to 2 rooms in our house, all others being closed off because of ‘brownouts’ – times of reduced power to our home.
But, by the early 1980s, we were in REALLY hot years. We wore two AC units out completely.
And, so on from them – back and forth, from too hot for extended periods of time, to freezing cold and snowy for many winters.
Each time, accompanied by headlines in newspapers and magazines, about the TERRIBLE Climate Changes, and how they would end in either:

  • A complete meltdown of all glaciers and extinction of humankind, due to the runaway heat, or
  • A full-on Ice Age, and extinction of humankind, due to the runaway cold.

Both scenarios accompanied by dire threats of horrific outcomes, UNLESS the taxpayers came up with a buttload of cash to stave off the catastrophe.
Over and over, decade after decade.
I got off the Doomsday Bus when I became a ham radio operator, and learned about solar cycles. Since then, I’ve seen no need to climb back on the OMG! The World is ENDING! short bus.
